🎶 From Holiday Cheer to a Musical New Year: Beat The Winter Blues

Early childhood music classes are a perfect activity for your kids during the winter months

By Mandy Stinchcomb, Music Together Chesapeake December 2, 2025

Does this sound familiar? Daylight is short and the winter weather keeps you indoors. Kids (and parents) get stir-crazy, parents struggle to find engaging activities, screen time increases, and a sense of isolation creeps in.

The Solution: Early Childhood Music Classes for children ages 0-5yrs, and the grown-ups that love, them provide a predictable, joyful, and active weekly activity that the whole family can enjoy together. Predictable routines help children feel safe and know what is coming next in their days and weeks. As a bonus, classes support your child’s growth in many areas!

Learn more about how music classes are important to your child's overall growth and development, and find the best the class for your child from Music Together Chesapeake

Classes are held in Annapolis and Severna Park.

“Music Supports All Learning!”

Music Learning and Development: We are helping children develop Basic Music Competence- the ability to “speak” the language of music (singing in tune and keeping a steady beat).

  • Listening and Audiating: Hearing, understanding, and internalizing tonality and rhythm.
  • Expression and Improvisation: Children are encouraged to move, sing, and play age appropriate instruments freely

Language Development and Emergent Literacy: The rhythmic, melodic, and patterned nature of music strongly supports language skills:

  • Phonological and Rhyme Awareness: Singing and chanting helps children hear and manipulate the sounds of language.
  • Vocabulary Development: Exposure to new words and creative story telling through songs
  • Active Listening: Following musical cues and directions strengthens general listening skills

Social and Emotional Development: Group music-making is inherently social and helps children and their grown-ups have a sense of community.

  • Social Skills: Practicing turn-taking, following a peer’s lead, sharing space.
  • Self-expression and Confidence: The playful, non-performance oriented environment encourages children to express themselves through movement and sound.
  • Relationship Building: Music Together is family-focused, strengthening bonds between children and their parents/caregivers.

Cognition and General Knowledge: Music activities provide playful ways to engage with core cognitive concepts.

  • Pattern Recognition: Identifying and reproducing rhythmic and melodic patterns.
  • Memory and Sequencing: Remembering song lyrics, motions, and the order of activities.

Physical and Motor Development: Music naturally encourages movement, which refines both gross and fine motor skills.

  • Coordination: Moving to the beat, dancing, and coordinating different body parts.
  • Motor Skills: Using fingers for fingerplays or manipulating small rhythm instruments.
