5 Easy Ways to Avoid Your Child's Summer Reading Slide

By Yolanda Fraction, M.Ed., Fraction Learning May 17, 2017

Have you decided how your child will spend the summer? Here are easy ways to make sure that your child does not fall behind in Reading:

1. Enroll your child in our "Get School Ready" summer reading enrichment camp in Pasadena, Maryland (for incoming 2nd and 3rd graders).

2. Take your child to the library each week to check out "just right" books. Just right books are books that are interesting to your child and at their independent reading level. Let your 1st or 2nd grader read about 100 words silently or aloud. If your child misses more than 3 words, the book may be too challenging for independent reading. Research shows that children are more likely to check out books when they select the books.

3. Start a reading log. Post the log on your fridge or bulletin board so that your child can use it every day. Reward your child with extra screen time or a fun outing when the log is completed each week.

4. Create a summer reading response journal or notebook that can be used to record your child's thoughts before, during or after reading. Your child's reading comprehension skills will improve as a result.

5. Read "on the go" by downloading a literacy app or eBook. Some of my favorite free apps include ABCmouse.com and Vocabulary/Spelling City.
