This past week, I was talking to a client who told me that she was preparing to create a plan for her child's learning activities this summer. All of these efforts would be in addition to her child having online tutoring sessions with me. I applauded her proactive measures because I know that carpooling children to summer camp, managing family commitments and planning for summer vacations is not easy. Parents, take a moment to pat yourself on the back, your child has made it through another academic year! You should feel proud of yourself, not just your child. If your child's summer schedule is jam packed with activities and you want to ensure that your child does not loose the awesome progress that he or she has made this school year, but elevates that progress, be sure to do the following:

1- Keep a nice stack of books and learning materials in your car.

Place the activities in a plastic tub or in the seatback pocket of your car. Encourage your child to select fiction and non-fiction books (varying levels), a coloring book with crayons, a workbook and pencil and a journal/notebook. One of my favorite workbooks is published by Summer Bridge. Your child can use these materials when you're on the go this summer! Encourage your child to journal about their summer adventures. Children love to draw pictures and write stories about their trips, making new friends at summer camp and spending time with family. Have your child read their story to you. They can even publish it using StoryJumper.

2- Build your child's fluency skills using a simple kitchen timer, the timer on your smartphone or this reading fluency app, Scholastic Reading Timer. Your child will enjoy racing against the clock while reading familiar favorites. For this to really work, it's key that your child select books that he or she has read before and is comfortable reading independently. Record the number of words that your child reads in 1 minute. Here's a handout that will help you assess your child's fluency.
