Lil' Bites: Go Further With Food

By Emily Craft, RDN, CSP, LDN March 9, 2018

Happy March, Macaroni Kid Families!

March is a month that’s near and dear to my heart:  National Nutrition Month.  This year, the theme for National Nutrition Month is ‘Go Further with Food.’  The focus is to reduce food waste and promote sustainable food practices.  This is the perfect opportunity to start a conversation about what your family can do to make the best possible choices for your health, the health of the community, the environment and those producing your food.  Since this is such a vast topic, here are some ideas to help you get started:

-Reduce food waste by repurposing leftovers.  Frittatas are my absolute favorite way to take whatever is left in the kitchen (veggies, cheeses, whole grains…anything!) and turn it into a delicious and well balanced meal.  Here is a base recipe to get you started, but get creative!  That’s half the fun.  https://recipecenter.giantfood.com/recipes/92774/veggie-frittata

Last night’s pasta taking up space in the fridge?  Here’s a pasta frittata for you!  https://recipecenter.giantfood.com/recipes/101083/leftover-pasta-frittata

-Check your ratings.  At Giant, we’ve partnered with a company called HowGood, an independent research organization that rates food products on their social and environmental impact. Developed over 10 years, the HowGood research framework uses insights from farmers, industry experts, NGOs, scientists, and academics and data from hundreds sources to assign its ratings.  There’s even an app shoppers can use to find GOOD, GREAT, and BEST foods that the whole family will enjoy!

-Buy local.  By buying local, your family can reduce the environmental impact of foods, support the community, and get the most nutritious foods possible.  Bright Farms is a local farm that supplies Giant with hydroponically grown fresh greens all year round!  Check out this yummy  greens salad that will help you go further with foods through year round local greens!  https://recipecenter.giantfood.com/recipes/27636/green-leafy-salad-w-grilled-shrimp-vinaigrette

-Talk about it!  Have a family brainstorming session about how you can go further with food.  Maybe you can start composting food scraps, purchase less food that usually goes bad, or vow to purchase only sustainably sourced seafood.

No matter what you choose, I would love to hear about it!  Feel free to connect with me at Emily.craft@giantfood.com.  Together, we can go further with food!

Until next time, eat well!
