Explore Maryland with Virtual Field Trips and Local Online Activities

Corona Quarantine Activities

The Old Line State is full of history and educational opportunities.  Due to our limitations from coronavirus, it's difficult to explore right now.  We put together a list of virtual experiences based in Maryland for you and your family to explore during this break from school. We've even included some bonus activities to get your kids thinking (and maybe even give you a little break) Click the links to check them out: 

SCIENCE


National Aquarium Baltimore hosts a self-guided virtual tour you can check out the Atlantic Coral Reef, Shark Alley, the Tropical Rain Forest and more.  Info buttons allow children to click and learn specifics about featured animals within the tour.  The bright colors of the fish, birds and other animals make this tour an adventure for your eyes.  **Bonus Activity:  have your children create a picture of one of the animals they explored after the field trip. 

BayTrippers Online Field Trip to the Chesapeake Bay is an interactive study of the bay, it's wildlife, and the changes throughout the year.  Use this site to navigate a sail along the bay complete with views from different locations on the boat and more.  **Bonus Activity: while exploring the changes in the Chesapeake Bay, have your kids talk about what changes they see and discuss ways your family can work to save the bay. 

The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation, Inc is offering many virtual experiences.  From story times to farm tours, you can find activities galore on their Facebook page. **Bonus Activity: plant a vegetable garden this spring to show your kids how they can have their own agricultural experience in your backyard. 

Got a space lover?  Check out Telescope Operations Control Center (STOCC) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MarylandThis series of videos describes the physical space and what the jobs of the team who manages the Hubble Telescope.  **Bonus Activity: have your children research views from Hubble Telescope and see images and video.  Have them draw what they see. 

HISTORY


Antietam National Battlefield  is one of the most well-preserved Civil War battlefields and a must-see for any Civil War enthusiast. The virtual tour consists of eight scenes where children can click on different locations to see real images from the Civil War era and learn information about what occurred in those locations. **Bonus Activity: have your children create a timeline of the war as they are exploring the battlefield. 

Hammond-Harwood House museum is one of the highlights of Annapolis’ Historic District. Tours and programs focus on architecture, cultural history, urban slavery, paintings, furniture, and decorative art. History comes to life at this incredible site!  **Bonus Activity: Have your children research the clothing of colonial times and make a list of the items that they would wear. 

ART


Art abounds at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore! Your child can explore the art by medium, collection, location within the museum and more.  Each piece of art includes a description and history.  **Bonus Activity: head over to YouTube and visit Art for Kids Hub and let your kids take some drawing lessons.

MUSIC

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is putting on live musical performances Wednesday and Sunday evenings.  You can see them live on their Facebook page and view past performances as well. **Bonus Activity: See what music your children can make using household items to create instruments.
